Japanese advertisements that were discontinued due to human-rights-related complaints were analyzed. One example of an apology for a retracted public message in 2019 was suspected of “non-apology apology,” involved the speaker insisting on cancelling the non-literal content derived from the message while the hearer rejects such an action.\nThis paper outlines previous studies on pragmatic inference and cancellability of conversational implicatures and explicatures, then shows how the non-literal content inferred from the public message in question is alleged to be noncancellable.
