The qualitative analysis of the data using the Steps for Coding and Theorization (SCAT), which focuses on “relationships between nursery school children and people in local communities” generated 12 concepts, nine subcategories, and two categories; the analysis of “relationships between\nnursery school teachers and the people in local communities” generated 10 concepts, seven subcategories, and two categories.\n　Our results indicate that relationships between nursery schools and local communities differ depending on the local environment surrounding the nursery school and the time since the nursey school opened. However, there was no significant difference between nursery schools with and without gardens. All nursery school children engaged in “greetings/conversations with people in their local communities”, which led to a sense of security and a feeling of being\namong friends who looked out for them and with whom they communicated on a daily
