AL has both motivational and activity form aspects. Although motivation of students is important, college students lack motivation for AL. The authors attempted to clarify factors for enhancing student motivation by administering a questionnaire asking university students about active participation in AL. Results showed that lack of English comprehension was preventing students from active participation in AL and therefore needed promotion. It was also found that many students prefer listening to lectures and taking notes to speaking actively. As seemingly passive learning and rest time have active aspects and discussion in small groups can be effective, it was thought that students should be offered various learning activities including seemingly passive activities in order to help them participate in classroom activities. Various activities can be fitted for individual student needs despite large class sizes.
