First, child raising in the Edo period captured by Edward S. Morse and others was explored as a positive aspect. Second, the customs of  mabiki and ko-gaeshi (forms of infanticide), based on a field survey regarding ema (votive tablets), were examined as a negative aspect.\n　The results revealed that in child raising, a selection was carried out between the “children to be raised,” which, as evaluated by Morse and others, was based on the Japanese perspective that viewed children as a blessing, and the “children not to be raised,” where parents were forced to choose between infanticide and abandoning their children to perish. Basic materials for the construction of social systems to nurture the next generation by society as a whole are
