Although studies on the appointment of the first female principals in middle and high schools have been conducted （Takano, 2014）, there have almost been no discussions on the appointment opportunities and careers based on the qualitative data of the women taking on the role of the first female principals. Therefore, this study focuses on the first female principals in public middle and high schools in Japan. By analyzing the narratives from qualitative research （interviews） of four principals from three prefectures, this study aims to describe what the appointment opportunities were for the first women principles and the kind of careers they had.
