But some research shows a tendency for children to have difficulty understanding the function of number line diagram, recognizing the meaning of calculation through active use of the number line diagram, and finding the method of calculation by themselves. \nTo examine this tendency, the author analyzed some textbooks. Through textbook analysis the author noticed that the followings are necessary for improvement of arithmetic textbooks.\n(1) Transition from the tape diagram stage to the number line diagram stage needs more precise focus. We have to pay more attention to this stage transition.\n(2)We must describe the nine steps more precisely.\n(3) We must distinguish the different usage of number line diagrams between quantity and proportion.\n(4)We must have pupils make use of the idea of proportion as the evidence for constructing formulas rather than number line diagram itself, in order that they recognize the meaning of calculation through active use of the number line diagram and reach the method of calculation. This treatment is based on the idea that the thought process is more important than diagram.\n(5) To clarify the cases in which number line diagrams are used effectively. Each textbook has its own strong point, however, there is still room to improve.
