The purpose of this study was to focus on vocabulary, one of the fundamental elements of language activity, while examining the literature on this topic. Upon investigation, it was found that use of the word “impractical” regarding this topic, generally referred to the inability of graduates to speak English, even after 6 years of study in junior and senior high school. English education specialists counter this criticism by maintaining that the nature of second language acquisition dictates that becoming fully conversant in English through the education system alone is impossible. Individuals who have been successful in foreign language acquisition report the necessity to fully master 2,500 to 3,000 frequently used words in the earlier stages of learning, while the present analysis revealed that some English textbook series being utilized in junior and senior high schools do not meet these numbers.
