In view of the fact that the number line diagram has been used in arithmetic textbooks since the middle of the 1980s, the author intended to investigate the background and conditions surrounding this practice. As a result, the author learned the following.\n(1) A number line diagram was shown in “Teaching Guidance for Elementary Mathematics” published in 1978. The author noticed that some practices using number line diagrams have been in use since 1980. \n(2) Transition from one number line diagram to two number line diagrams must be done more precisely.\n(3) Though children can understand the meaning of multiplication of decimal fraction through the descriptions of proportion and ratio by using “Fukidasi” more easily, we have to describe the idea of proportion and ratio in the context of textbooks as sentences.\n(4) As to the method of multiplication of decimal fraction, children can understand the procedure of multiplication more easily.
